Please email info@dreamfordemocracy.org for answers to any questions not listed below.

  1. Who runs Dream for Democracy?
Tracy Huang, Zandile Bekwa, and Jamie Cohen, the current Board of Directors and students at Amherst College, run Dream for Democracy (DFD). For a description of each Director’s biography and contact information, please click on "About the DFD Team" on the tabbed navigation.
  2. How is the Dream for Democracy conference different from other debate competitions?
Dream for Democracy is, first and foremost, hosting a leadership conference. However, since communication is such an important aspect of conveying one's message and inspiring others, the debate competition is part of our program. However, we have additional elements like civic engagement through outreach, college application workshops, a mentorship program, and an interactive forum.

Furthermore, this conference is on an invitation-only basis, unlike other debate competitions. DFD chooses specific countries based on prevailing political and economic conditions. Having a variety of international participants will help to create a diverse learning environment.

  3. What are the duties of the coach for each debate team?
The coach will be in charge of registration. Each coach should be prepared to guide the team through the application process. The coach will travel with the team and chaperone its members to and from the conference.
  4. How do I register for the conference?
Coaches can begin the application process online. Please see "Team Registration" at the top.
  5. What are the selection criteria for students who want to attend the conference?
Students from grades 10 through 12 may apply. While there is no single deciding factor in gaining acceptance, we are looking for candidates who are highly motivated, exhibit intellectual curiosity, and can think critically on socio-political issues. Debate experience is not necessary but may be taken into consideration.
  6. Now that the registration process is complete, how should students prepare for the competition?
Students should read extensively on African current affairs. In addition, students will receive training on debating procedures and strategies in the first and second day of the conference.
  7. Will language differences be a problem for the participants?
No, we expect that all attending schools use English as the primary language of instruction.
  8. Where will the participants stay during the conference?
A host school will provide room and board. Debate teams and their coaches will stay in the existing residential facilities and eat meals on site. The teachers who are receiving debate training will stay in hotels around the area. The DFD team will make the necessary arrangements.
